Guys, I'm confused.  There seems to be more to choose from for a
mobile database than days of the week.  I am starting a mobile app
that will require RDA or merge replication back tp a SQL 2005
installation over a WiFi network.  I am developing the desktop client
app in C# 2005 and want to be able to hold a local copy of the
database on the mobile device.  Previous application I hae written
have used SQL2K and SQL CE, however now I have CE, SQL mobile and SQL
everywhere.  aaaarrrrggg.

Can anyone guide me towards the most suitable version to integrate
with my SQL 2005 server installation, my VS2005 development
installation and either WM3 or WM5 mobile device?  What additional
development tools will I require to install before I embark on my
project?

Many thanks in advance,

Jason.

Yes, they seem to change names as often as they change socks, although this
one seems to be stabilizing.  I'd say that SQL Server Compact is probably
the right choice right now.  You can run it on both of the mobile device
versions that you mentioned, *and* you can run it on the desktop, too, in
case you have that one laptop client that needs the same application.  You
can download it here:

It requires VS2008 for development.  The notes on the page say, "Microsoft
Visual Studio 2008 installs SQL Server Compact 3.5 for Devices if the Smart
Device Programmability option is selected in Visual Studio 2008. If you have
already installed Visual Studio 2008 than you don't need to separately
download and install SQL Server Compact 3.5 for Devices.", so, if you have
VS2008 already on your system, you probably already have it.

You need either VS 2005 Standard or VS 2008 Professional for device
development. For configuration of a VS 2005 environment, see this blog post:
