Hello,
I build a test report using SQL Server Business Intelligence
Development Studio. Every thing went well also I can preview of the
report. But when I wanted to deply it by right clicking it its throwing
a message

The first message I got was

'The project cannot be deployed because no target server is specified.
Provide a value for the TargetServerURL property in the property pages
for this project.'

To over the above problem I created a URL,
http://localhost/ReportServer  in the property page .

And again I tried deploying it and second I got this message :

'A connection could not be made to the report server
http://localhost/ReportServer
Additional Information:
The attempt to connect to the report failed. Check your connection
information and that the report server is a compatible version.
(Microsoft.ReportingServices.Designer)'

This is first time I am trying to get the reports. Could some one
please help me how do proceed from here?

Thanks
-L

Hi,
test whether you are able to see the report manager by using the
following URL:
http://localhost/reports/Pages/Folder.aspx

Hi Ben,
For some reason I don't have ReportServer folder or any other folder
under my wwwroot folder at all! Do I need to create them explicitly? I
have no clue how could fire off the test report I have created. I think
I do have BIDS installed and thats I could create a test report. But I
don't have Report or ReportServer folders created under my wwwroot
folder. May be I am beating around the bush. Could you please me here?
Thanks

Hi Learner,
This may sound a little weird but it is worth having a try.
Check whether if your SQL Server agent is running. I usually turn it
off when i don't need it as it consumes memory. So by chance it might
have been stopped.

After that, create a folder in your reporting manager and give that
folder name in the property page of your solution.

Let me know if it works.

In addition, i believe you don't have a local report server and are
using client.
So, if you use either the host name or the ip you should be able to
deploy the reports.

Hello Friends,
I just did check wheather or not my Sql server agent is running it
was stopped and I started it. But no luck yet. I guess like Bruce said
may be I only have client tools and I should install the Reporting
Server on my pc inorder to create a reporting server space. I will try
giving a shot at it. I will keep it updated here. Please help me here.
Thanks

Hello,
Yes like Bruce has mentioned my machine didn't have Server edition of
Reporting Services and just had client tools (may be it is called
BIDS). So I just installed the Reporting Services on my local machine.
I also have configured the "Configure the Rport Server" by creating the
'Report Server Virtual Directory', 'Report Manger Virtual Directory',
'Windows Service Identiy', 'Database setup' . But I haven't touched the
Encryption part of it because I have no clue what it takes to. And then
later on I  created a sample Report from AdventureWorksDW. I could
preview but when I try deploying it it is throwing a message with html
tags. I will past the message below

Back up a little. Before trying to deploy just try opening the website.

http://yourcomputername/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx

First make sure the above works. You can try localhost and if that doesn't
work put in the computername.

Bruce,
Yes I just tried the url by giving both localhost and the computer
name in bot the cases I got the below error

" Error

The report server is not responding. Verify that the report server is
running and can be accessed from this computer.

Home "

I checked the Sql Server Surface Area Configuration where I found both
"Reporting Services" and "SQL Server Agent" are running. I do not what
else to look. Can you help with the  location where can I look to see
if its running?

Thanks

Try the following:
1. Just in case, try a reboot.
2. Check that two databases have been created and exist (reportserver,
reportservertempdb)
3. check that two websites have been created and exist (reports and
reportserver)
4. Run the configuration tool and make sure everything is green.

Even after a re-boot of the machine, try to restart SQL Server
Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER).

At times the status of this service is displayed as started but it
needs a restart.

Try this and let me know if it works.

Greetings Friends,
I rebooted the machine and when I tried dploying this time around I
have got the error message

'Error    1    The version of the report server database is either in a
format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is
'Unknown'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.40'. To continue, update the
version of the report server database and verify access rights.        0    0    '

1).Like Bruce suggested I also checke for the databases (ReportServer,
ReportServerTempDB) but I couldn't find them under the databases node
in the management studio. But I got the Reports and ReportServer
websites created under the 'default web site' folder in IIS.
2).AS far as the configuration of the Report Server, I have got Server
Status, Report Server Virtual Directory, Report Manager Virtual
Directory, Windows Service Identity, Web Service Identity, Database
Setup are turned green. But Encryption Keys is blue in color and
finally Initialization is red in color.

When I clicked on Encryption Keys I have got the Restore and Delete
buttons are Enabled and rest of them are disabled.
When I clicked on Intialization (which is in red color with x mark on
it) its popping up a message box with the same information as above
when I tried to deploy it!

Hope fully this gives a little inside of whats happening here.

I appreciate all of your valueble time.

Thanks

There is your problem. If you don't have those two databases something is
seriously wrong. The install did not work.

It sounds to me like you installed the client tools and you did not install
the server. With the client tools you can create and preview a report but
there is nowhere to deploy it.

You need to install SQL Server Data Engine and SQL Reporting Services.

Then do I need to uninstall and reinstall the reporting services alone?

like you have mentioned in one of your postings I need to have both
SQL Server Data Engine and SQL Reporting Services.

I guess I already have SQL Server Data Engine installed on my pc. I am
not sure if it is the management studio or not. if it is I do have it.
or in other words if I had management studion I already had SQL Server
Data Engine. please correct me here.

As far as the SQL Reporting Services I will uninstall and reinstall it
once again. Please advise.
Thanks

SQL Server database needs to be installed. You should see Master database,
etc. RS adds two databases of its own.

Hello,
I tried changing and reinstalling the Reporting services component
from Add Remove Programs but unfortunately I couldn't install
ReportServer, ReportServerTempDB databases. I am not sure if I am
missing some thing here but couldn't install these databases. Is there
any thing I need to select by clicking the advanced button and select
in there? Please help me.

Thanks

These databases should have been installed when you installed RS. I suggest
uninstalling RS and then reinstalling. I assume you are an administrator on
the machine you are installing on? If so, then your login will also have
appropriate rights with SQL Server for these to be installed (if SQL Server
is using integrated security).
