In order to use the reporting services do you have to use Microsoft SQL? Can
you use the reporting services for another database?
Bruce L-C  [MVP] - 30 Jun 2008 20:08 GMT
You can report off of data from a wide variety of data sources: SQL Server,
Sybase, Oracle, etc. However, RS needs to create and use two databases in
SQL Server. These databases are used for metadata storage and object
caching. It cannot run without this. Where the data you are reporting off of
though can be from somewhere else.

Thanks. So it would work fine reading off of Informix. I don't think the
maximum 4 GB included in the Express edition would be enough, though.

Ahh, you didn't say you were using Express. Express is a free product. It is
intended only for reporting off of local data. I.e. data in SQL Server on
the same machine. You cannot do what you want to do using Express.

All of the other versions would work for what I need on Informix, though?

Yes, assuming Informix has a decent ODBC or OLEDB driver. I found that going
against Sybase that using ODBC driver worked best. That is was the most
stable and fastest way to get the data.
