SQL Server Forum / Services / Reporting Services / July 2008Visual Studio 2008 and SRS 2000
We have a SQL Server 2000 instance that is currently working properly. We have a developer who has been creating reports for this RS just fine. I would like to being to create my own simple reports. Can I use Visual Studio 2008 Standard to develop for RS 2000? Will the version of VS work properly with this version of SRS 2000, or is there a better tool for this. Thanks for your help Matt You cannot use VS 2008 or VS 2005 for RS 2000 reports. You have to install a version of VS 2003 (not sure how you do that now) It used to be that I told people to buy VB.net 2003 (cost about $100). You would install this and then the report designer. Starting with RS 2005 a version of VS is bundled in. The way it works is a special version of VS is installed IF you do not have the appropriate version of VS installed. If you do then it integrates with the already installed VS. Here is how it pairs up: RS 2000 - VS 2003 (must have a version of VS installed) RS 2005 - VS 2005 (if no VS 2005 installed then it installs a special version of VS just to host the report designer) RS 2008 - VS 2008 (if no VS 2008 installed then it installs a special version of VS just to host the report designer) All three can be installed on the same machine (assuming you have disk space). If you can I strongly recommend updating to RS 2005. Note that RS 2005 can use SQL 2000 for its data store BUT you do have to have a SQL 2005 license.
