I have what seems to be a good reason to foray into Service Broker.  Does
anyone know of any good books or articles other than BOL to use as a
technical reference, etc?

I'd start with http://www.sqlservicebroker.com
Has a link to Roger's book (the best source of info!), to Rushi's blog and
to my blog also.
