Hi,

We have suddenly started having a problem with a webserver locking up as
a process called msftesql.exe uses 100% CPU on all processors. This
causes the server to be so unresponsive that it can only be shut down by
holding down the power button.

We have SQL 2005 SP1 and SQL 2000 installed but I don't know which
version this process belongs to. Only one database on the machine uses
full text indexing and it is a small 60mb database. The index is on a
couple of columns on one table with only 8000 rows but for some reason,
the process uses 5+ hours of CPU time on a dual processor 2.6GHz XEON
which doesn't seem realistic.

How can I prevent this process crippling the machine on an almost daily
basis?

Nick...

Are you indexing binary or Asian content? These are processor intensive, but
not to the extent that you see. If you are indexing binary content are you
using a third party iFilter?
