Hello -

I am having a problem installing the MS03-031 hotfix on SQL Server 2000. The
installation package extracts the files and says that the installation was
successful, but when the version # is checked - it is still 8.00.760 and not
8.00.818

I have rebooted the server and tried stopping the sqlservr and sqlagent
services while installing, but neither fixed the issue. The only alternative
that I can think of is to take backups, uninstall, reinstall and then patch
sql server to the appropriate level. any other suggestions?

Hello,

It sounds like the install of sp3 did not go well.

Can you please check your logs to ensure sp3 was installed properly?

Also make sure the windows account used to install sp3 is a local
administrator account. If not, use a local administrator account to
reinstall sp3. After sp3 has been installed successfully, install MS03-031
hotfix on the machine.

RESOLUTION: Before you install the 8.00.818 you need to apply

1) SQL Server 2K SP3a. You can download sp3a from the following site:

SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a

2) And then install the security patch Frm:

SQL Server 2000 (32-bit) Security Patch MS03-031

Ben,

Once you get SP3A confirmed as applied install 826161 ( with MS03-031
included) as it fixes a problem with MS03-031.
