This might be a bit of a stupid question, but I've never seen this before.
I've just taken over a new SQL instance from a previous employee (SQL 2005
sp2, on Windows 2003).
There are several logins in this SQL instance that have a $ at the end of
them. They appear to be domain accounts, however they don't actually exist
in the domain. All of the login names are other server names, they just have
a $ at the end of them (ie domain/servername$). Does anyone know what these
might be? Are they some sort of security mapping from that other server??

Those are machine accounts - with the dollar sign after the
name. A Service running under Network Service would be
recognized by it's machine account.
