SQL 2005 Password Changes

Hi,

I have some users on a SQL 2005 box that connect via SQL Authentication with
password policy enforcement.  If their password expires, they can try to
connect via Management Studio, and they will be prompted to change their
password.

Is there a lighter application than Management Studio that I can freely
distribute to my users for changing their expired passwords?  My users will
generally connect via existing, custom, client applications that will just
start failing every 90 days because their password expired.

If such a thing does not already exist, does anyone have any guidance on
writing a little connection tester app (C#?) that would take a server name,
user name and password, attempt a connection and pop a password change
dialog box when the password is expired?

Hi Daniel,
I understand that you would like to know if there is a lighter tool for
distribution so that your users can change their passwords when expired.
You also would like to know how you can write a connection tester
application in C# if the tool is not existed.
If I have misunderstood, please let me know.

SQL Server 2005 does not provide such a lighter tool for distribution;
however I think that you can implement it by yourself.

The error code for password expiration is 18487 or 18488. You can catch the
SqlException of SqlConnection.Open method and if the exception Number
property value equals either of the error codes, you can pop up a dialog
for your user so that he can change the password. To change the password,
you can use SqlConnection.ChangePassword method.

You may refer to:
SqlConnection.Open Method
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.sqlconnection
.open.aspx

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel
free to let me know.

Best regards,
Charles Wang

where an initial response from the community or a Microsoft Support

most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions or complex

Charles,

Thank you for your response.  While due to changing winds, I haven't had the
chance to try it, I fully understand what you suggested.
