Hi Everyone,

I have SQL Server 2000 Developer installed on Windows Vista SP1. It is build
2187. I went and grabbed the update that came out today (buy the guidelines
for version number, I needed the QFE relelase for SQL 2000 SP4). When I try
to install it, the extracring to C:\<some guid> goes OK, then I get the
elevated UAC prompt for Updatelauncer.exe, I click Allow, then I get this
dialog box:

Setup Error
Not enough storage is available to process this command
OK

I click OK and then get this dialog box:

Setup Error
installation did not complete
OK

I have changed the SQL 2000 QFE to run in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode
with administrator privilege level. I do get further, I reach the inital QFE
wizard briefly, but then (almost immediately) I get this dialog box:

KB984111(ENU) Setup Error
KB948111(ENU) installation did not complete.
OK

I have extracted the files manually and ran this command in an elevated
command prompt;

C:\Users\allen\Downloads\Microsoft\SQL2000-KB948111-v8.00.2273-x86x64-ENU>updatelauncher.exe /log:C:\Temp\MS08040.txt

Here are the contents of the log file;

Funny enough, I have problems of apply the fix myself on Vista x64, but
for an SQL 2005 instance. But it seems that in my case, the issue is
exactly that I've run out of disk space...

Hmm... I *thought* that SQL 2K on Vista was like VB6 (which I also use) on
Vista:
Microsoft: "you know we can't help you with that"
Me: "meh, that's cool. all my code works with it and I only need it in a
development setting. it's all good."

The download page(1) says that Windows Vista is a supported platform for the
download. And not that this is a definitive on the subject, but all of the
other service packs and post service pack 4 QFEs have installed just fine-- I
*am* running build 2187 of SQL 2000 Developer.

I have plenty-o-space-- 78GB free.

I have read the .inf file for the update. It looks simple enough to do by
hand, copy over some files, change some registry settings, run some .sql
scripts. What do you think of doing this by hand?

Thanks for helping Erland! I have read alot of your articles and such. I
have found some help in them from time to time. Thanks dude.

Hm, maybe not. What I've learnt it that there are quite a few people
out there who have had problems with this hotfix for SQL 2005. And then
I mean real problem like running out of disk space. (And a false virus
alarm that I also ran into!) I haven't really understood what is going on,
but if people have moved their databses around, there appears to be some
trouble.

Then again, this may be different for SQL 2000.

Did you manage to get this working? I'm in the same pickle (Vista dev system
and I need the 2187 SQL 2000 Server).

Any tips would be appreciated.

I don't have any SQL 2000 on Vista, but I had the hotfix on disk (since my
SQL 2000 instance is on virtual machine). I started it, it asked for
permission, and then it bombed on the same error message "Not enough
storage is available to process this command".

Do you have 32-bit or 64-bit Vista? I have Vista x86.

Eh, I have Vista x64. My idea was that some lazy bum only tested on
VIsta x86. If now Vista is supported at all.

I'm running Vista SP1 32-bit.

After install installing  the Developer edition of SQL Server 200 and then
upgrading with SP4 I'm now at version 8.00.2039.

But none of the attempts to install the subsequent patches (I need to be at
2187 for my legacy support work) were successful. I'm currently looking at a
virtual machine workaround but it would be great if I could beat the install
on Vista into submission :-). Unfortunately I have limited time.

Thanks, then I know the issue is not limited to x86.

I think you need to go for that VM. SQL 2000 is not supported on Vista
as far as I know, despite that it says so on the download page for the
security fix.
