I understand that SQL Server 2005's licensing model is per socket, not per
core, for physical and virtual installations.  For virtualization, I
understand you can have multiple SQL Server 2005 installs and the licenses
are shared across the physical server.  Licensing is still determined by
physical sockets on the box hosting the virtual environment..

The virtual environment we've purchased has 4 sockets.  I have no use for
that much horse power and do not want to have to pay for 4 licenses.  Can I
limit my SQL Server install and corresponding OS to a single core's use,
thereby allowing me to pay for only a single license?  I'm willing to do
this for all our SQL Server installations in this virtual environment.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Not exactly: the SQL-Server 2005 licensing is per socket but each virtual
installation count as more (and separate) sockets; the exact number of
sockets to be counted for each VM beeing dependant on the number of
available virtual sockets inside that VM.  For a more detailed explanation,
you should read the following documents:

4/virtualization_brief.doc

These two licensing briefs can be found on the following page:

If you still have questions after that, I would suggest that you call
1-800-426-9400 in the US or your regional Microsoft office in other
countries to get an official answer from MS.
