Some places to Start:
For hierarchical probably IMS (from IBM) is the best-known implementation
although some network features were added to it.
For network type systems google for descriptions of products called IDMS and
the Codasyl "Data Base Task Group" (DBTG).
For relational the works of E.F.,Codd and C.J.Date will give you a good
start. Be prepared to discover that many will NOT regard the two systems you
name as "relational" and your entire report could turn in to "Is SQL really
relational".
Good Luck!
