Detecting and installing SQL2000 fix 948110

Hi,

Firstly I have a W2K3 SP2 server with SQL2000 SP3 build 818 on it. If I run
Microsoft Update under IE7 it is not picking up the bad version of SQL2000.
I had seen a note to say that MS has improved the detection of this patch.
Personally I would never use Microsoft Update to update an SQL server but it
should be able to detect if the patch is needed.

My second question is does 948110 have to be installed on an SQL2000 SP4
build or will it apply against a lower SP3 build?

Thanks

Chris

I have now answered the first question. Looks like Microsoft Update will
only flag this if you are running SQL2000 SP4. We are on SP3 build 818
(Slammer protected). So much for using Microsoft Update to detect a bad
build.

I know I can apply MS08-040 after upgrading to SP4. Not sure about going
from SP3 though. The article implies an upgrade from SP4 so looks like I
have to apply SP4 then MS08-040.

It is necessary to upgrade to SP4 before the update is offered.

Thanks,
