I'm seeing others that have problems with this update.  It will not install
on my SBS 2003 server.  In the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948110
there is detail about the SP4 not being correctly installed.  I did notice
that if I eliminated the autorun.inf on my sp4 install files, then ran the
code below from the
%Program Files%\Microsoft SQL Server SP4\WMSDE folder, that the update goes
through.

setup /upgradesp sqlrun instancename=MSFW /l*v c:\msde2Ksp4.log

Anyone else with this issue?  The initial symptom occured when my server
could no longer reach the internet despite all the router traffic functioning
without issues.  After a couple of reboots and a couple of times through the
CEICW, I was able to reestablish a connection.

Currently I am re-running the installation as listed above.  Not sure it is
doing anything that hasn't already been done.   The KB 948110 update will
still not go through.

I called Microsoft and this one was a simple Windows Update and Bits error
and had nothing to do with the MSDE.

Fix is related to starting and restarting services after checking for a
clean registry.

More specifically:
Clear the proxy cache
Make sure the zonemaps in the update are correct
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet
Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\microsoft.com\update
and the proper permissions are enabled for windows update

Stop the services
Net stop WuAuServ
Net stop BITS

ReRegister all of the Windows Update link libraries.  You should be able to
get a list - it includes wuapi, wups,wuauend... and many others
Clear the BITS Application data download folder
Stop the Cryptographic service net stop cryptsvc
Rename the Catroot2 folder
Restart the Wuauserv to recreate your folder
then stop it again

Restore the update history from backup.
Restart the service (wuauserv) and bits and event log and CryptSvc and Rpcss

Many thanks to Microsoft for this fix.

My update will not install either, but I have no idea as to what the update
is or what it will do.  I read the update site, but it all looks like
nonsense to me.  I am lost and confused.

I believe it is meant for the Windows Defender.   You may be able to get it
to run simply by stopping and starting your wauserv services.  There is a
catroot2 folder that keeps a record of your updates. If you delete it, then
Windows Update will need to recreate it the next time you go online.   If you
rename the folder after you stop the service, when you restart it, it
recreates the folder.  At that point, stop it again and copy the renamed
catroot2 back in (Catroot2 is in the windows folder).  If you intstallation
is truly hosed, you may as well use Microsoft's free support for this
occasion.   If not, the simple fix described here may fix what ails you.

Net start WuAuServ
Net stop WuAuServ

If your bits service is messed up, MS can give you a fix.
