My rant - profiles slow things up when you connect VIA VPN. I use Source
Safe religiously and don't want the profile - it gets in the way - ho hum,
waiting for the server to synchronize... hmmm, just ate lunch, getting
sleepy, still waiting..., ho hum <snore>.
I adjusted the registry items and the Visual Studio 2005 folder to the
C:\VS8 folder that I created in my root and the program opens up quickly.
How do I keep the VS 2005 from recreating that foolish folder in MY
Documents every time I open the program? (yep, I understand that the net
admin has to be paranoid about what is done on my machine... which came
first, the Shadow Syncronization or the Source Safe for Visual Studio, AHEM!)

Someone else agrees:

Look at why the author chose this path. He wanted the user to start off with
a good profile... a useful profile. Now it seems this has become an admin
tool to monitor everything the company should monitor (useful, but not when
it slows down productivity).

OK, as it so happens it isn't totally the wrong forum since VS2005 is also
the BI for SQL Server Management so with this in mind, I did find how to
change this:
In the registry folder:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software\Microsoft\Windows
\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\User Shell Folders
you will find an entry called "Personal" which will point to "C:\Documents
and Settings\My Documents"
If you copy "My Documents" to your root drive (C:\), and change this one
line, everything else will default to C:\My Documents instead of
"C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents" As to whether is will prevent
Server 2003 from issuing its shadow over that folder, I can't say just yet,
but it does appear to have improved my ability to open and close Visual
Studio quickly for the time being.

When you finish, don't forget to run your import and export settings wizard
(Tools menu)

That doesn't work. The SBS 2003 flips the registry entry back to the server
user file. Then it dumps your file.
