Hi,

Is it possible to restore a backup from a SQL Server 2005 SP2
installation to a SQL Server 2005 RTM installation?  (RTM = no service
packs installed)

In case there are no backups, is it possible to copy the SP2 database
files to the RTM server and attach them?

TIA,
Wessel

Yes it's possible. You can detach a database from a SQL Server 2005 SP2
instance and attach it to an RTM SQL Server 2005 instance. And you can
perform the restoration operation as well.

However, note that you can't attach a SQL Server 2005 database to a SQL
Server 2000 Instance nor you can't restore.

Thanks for your reply!

Would you know where I could find this information, without having to
ask for it btw?  It seemed like a basic question.

I answered this question from my experience. I've not seen a written
documentation about this in BOL but there must be somewhere.

I suggest you to refer to Books Online
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189826.aspx) when you have a
question about SQL Server. If you can't find anything for what you look for
then search for your question using a search engine (google, live search
etc.) And if you still can't find anything, you are welcome to come and ask
here.
