I am having an issue lately where users are unable to add to any table in
one of the databases on the SQL 2000 server for a while, but then out of the
blue everything starts working again. They are just doing a simple insert
of a record at the time.
For some reason I remembered that running CHKDSK x: without any parameters
and x = the drive of the SQL Data caused something to unlock an when I ran
it, it worked.
I keep getting the problem a couple of times a week and even though I know
the work around I don't know the cause or the permanent fix. Does this
situation sound familiar to anyone and could you reply with information on
the permanent fix?

What does "unable to add" mean? Do you get an error message? Could you
tell us what it is (explicitly, e.g. copy & paste, not paraphrased from
memory)?

Jordan:
Have you checked the status of the database data and log files? Are they set
to autogrow? have you done transaction log backups recently to keep them
under control?
Is your disk drive full?
Aaron B is right, we need more info to go on.
