It would really be helpful if I could change a named SQL Server instance to
a default instance;  can I do this?  how?

TIA

The supported way is to simply remove the named instance and install a
default instance.  Make sure you have your database backups and your
hotfixes and service packs in-sync so you can restore them on the default
instance

thanks ... that's what I did a few hours after posting the question since I
couldn't put it off;  was hoping there was a quicker way but I guess there
isn't

Be aware  that SQL Server Express Edition is installed as named instance
