Can someone tell me if SQL 2005 SP2 is stable for a production environment on Windows 2008?  We have received mixed information from a consultant and want to know for certain whether Windows 2008 is ready for SQL 2005.  Any articles / experiences would be appreciated.

Thank-you,
Rubens

Yes Windows 2008 is ready for SQL Server 2005.

This post has some firewall info you'll need to look into.

Off all the SQL2005 instances I have ahd experience with, only one is on
Windows 2008, and it's a recent install. That instance seems to work fine.
Compared to Windows 2003, my impression is that the percentage of SQL2005 on
Windows 2008 is rather small. I hope others with SQL2005 on Windows 2008 can
chime in to share their first-hand experience.

I have only tested Windows 2008 using SQL 2008.  As a company we are far
more likely to upgrade SQL before Windows (the IT department prefers
stability and consistency over features and performance, which is where our
groups differ), so Windows 2008 + SQL 2005 is going to be a very obscure
combination for me.

We have upgraded most of our production servers to Windows 2008 and
SQL Server 2005 SP2 (from Windows 2003 R2). It is by far the most
stable and reliable platform we have seen so far. Besides the long
list of enhancements and security improvements in the OS, we like very
much that most updates to Windows 2008 do not require restart. Our
production servers are 64 bit (we have a couple 32 bit installations
on test and development servers, and I can say the same for them, but
they have not been under a very heavy load).

On a side note, we have a couple SQL Server 2005 SP2 installation on
Hyper-V (the Windows 2008 built-in virtualization technology). That
has been a very pleasant surprise, in terms of both performance and
reliability.

Hi Rubens,

This is Charming Chen.

Based on my experience, SQL Server 2005 SP2 may work smoothly with Windows Server 2008.

Here are some useful articles for your reference.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or Microsoft Windows Vista

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/windowsvistasupport.mspx

SQL Server 2005 requires Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2) to run on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1. You must first install the full release version of SQL Server 2005 before you can apply SP2.

For more information about installing SQL Server Express SP2, see the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP2 Readme.

Note: SQL Server 2005 Express Edition SP1 can be installed on Windows Vista but has known issues with User Access Control. Service Pack 2 is the recommended patch level for Windows Vista RTM support. SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) SP2 can be used to install a new instance of SQL Server Express SP2.

Earlier versions of SQL Server, including SQL Server 2000 (all editions including Desktop Engine edition, a.k.a. MSDE), SQL Server 7.0, and SQL Server 6.5 are not supported on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista. SQL Server 2005 is not supported on Windows 2008 Server Core. Customers running applications with these earlier versions of SQL Server should consider evaluating and upgrading to SQL Server 2005, which was designed to take advantage of the upcoming security and performance enhancements in the operating environment.

On the other hand, if you install SQL Server 2005 SP2 in a computer with Windows Server 2008 upgraded from Windows Server 2003 SP2, please refer to the following KB article.

Problems occur on a server that is running SQL Server 2005 when you upgrade Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 to Windows Server 2008

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948594

I hope the above information is helpful for you. Thank you.

Awesome, there are some great resources here Charming, I really appreciate it.  Will have a read over the next few days.

Much appreciated!
